Living Sustainably: Simple Steps to Make a Big Impact

By Tosha Larios

Sustainability is more than just a buzzword—it’s a way of life that can make a real difference in the world. Hi, I’m Tosha Larios, and I’ve dedicated much of my work to living sustainably, from farming at Star Track Farm to sharing tips on health and smart decision-making. Living sustainably means making choices that help protect our environment while still enjoying a good quality of life. It’s not as hard as it sounds, and everyone can take steps to make an impact.

What is Sustainable Living?

Sustainable living means reducing your environmental footprint by making thoughtful decisions in your daily life. Whether it’s the way we eat, the products we use, or the energy we consume, sustainable living is all about taking care of the planet. It doesn’t mean you have to give up everything you love—it just means finding smarter, eco-friendly alternatives. And, with some easy changes, you can live more sustainably without much effort.

Why Sustainable Living Matters

The choices we make every day impact the environment. From the food we eat to how we power our homes, everything adds up. If we don’t take care of the planet, future generations won’t have the same opportunities we do. Sustainable living helps conserve natural resources, reduce waste, and fight climate change. Plus, it often saves money and promotes a healthier lifestyle.

Start with What You Eat

One of the easiest ways to live sustainably is by changing how you eat. Eating locally grown, organic food not only supports sustainable farming but also reduces the carbon footprint of shipping food long distances. At Star Track Farm, we grow organic fruits and vegetables using sustainable farming techniques that protect the environment.

Another great way to live sustainably through food is by embracing the idea of food as medicine. The food we eat has the power to keep us healthy and strong. Choosing a plant-based diet or reducing the amount of processed foods you eat can have a huge impact on both your health and the planet. Reducing Waste at Home

Reducing waste is another key part of living sustainably. Start by cutting back on single-use plastics like water bottles, straws, and plastic bags. Instead, use reusable alternatives like stainless steel bottles, cloth bags, and glass containers. You can also recycle more at home. Make sure to sort your paper, plastics, and metals, so they can be reused and not end up in landfills.

Composting is a great way to reduce food waste while also enriching your garden. At Star Track Farm, I use composting to return nutrients to the soil, helping our crops grow healthy without chemical fertilizers. You can easily start a compost pile at home with kitchen scraps like vegetable peels and coffee grounds.

Saving Energy and Water

Saving energy is one of the easiest and most impactful ways to live sustainably. Turn off lights when you’re not in the room, unplug electronics when they’re not in use, and switch to energy-efficient appliances. You can also save water by taking shorter showers, fixing leaks, and using water-saving devices in your home. Every drop counts when it comes to conserving resources!

At Star Track Farm, I use water-saving techniques like drip irrigation to ensure that our crops get just the right amount of water without wasting any. These small changes can make a big difference when it comes to protecting our planet.

Making Smart Financial Choices

Living sustainably isn’t just about the environment—it’s about making smart decisions with your money too. Using advanced girl math, I’ve developed strategies for saving money while also supporting sustainable living. Whether it’s investing in energy-efficient appliances or buying in bulk to reduce waste, smart financial choices go hand-in-hand with sustainability.

The Role of STEM in Sustainability

Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) play a huge role in living sustainably. From solar panels that generate clean energy to the study of ecosystems that helps us protect wildlife, STEM helps us understand and solve environmental challenges. I’m passionate about exploring the ways that STEM can help us live better and more sustainably. On my blog STEM with Dr. T, I dive deeper into the science behind sustainable living and how it benefits all of us.

Get Started Today!

Living sustainably doesn’t have to be complicated. Small changes, like using less water, reducing waste, and choosing organic food, can make a big difference over time. At Star Track Farm, I’m committed to using sustainable practices every day, and I hope you’ll join me in making the world a better place.
