Living Sustainably: A Guide to a Greener Life

Hi there! I’m Tosha Larios, and today, I want to talk about something that’s close to my heart: living sustainably. We all know the world is changing, and it’s more important than ever to think about how we live and the impact we have on the planet. But don’t worry! Living sustainably doesn’t mean you have to give up everything you love. In fact, it’s all about making small, smart choices that add up to big changes over time. Let’s dive into how we can make a difference, one step at a time!

What Does It Mean to Live Sustainably?

Living sustainably means taking care of the environment while also taking care of yourself. It’s about making choices that reduce waste, conserve resources, and protect the Earth for future generations. Think of it as a way to live in harmony with nature, without using up all the resources that we need to survive. Whether it’s reducing plastic waste, conserving water, or eating local, there are so many ways to live a more eco-friendly life.

At Star Track Farm, we practice sustainable farming by composting, conserving water, and using natural ways to keep our crops healthy. You can learn more about how we farm sustainably and grow organic food that’s good for you and the Earth on our farm website.

Sustainable Eating

One of the easiest ways to live more sustainably is by being mindful of what you eat. Eating sustainably means choosing foods that are good for your body and the planet. You can do this by eating locally grown fruits and vegetables, choosing organic foods, and reducing the amount of processed foods you eat.

If you want to learn more about how food can be used as medicine, check out my Food as Medicine blog. There, I talk about how the right foods can heal your body and keep you healthy.

Eating seasonally is another great way to live sustainably. Foods that are in season require less energy to grow and transport, which means they have a smaller carbon footprint. Plus, they taste better! I grow a lot of seasonal produce at Star Track Farm, so be sure to check out what’s in season near you.

Reducing Waste

Waste is a big problem in today’s world, but we can all do our part to reduce it. One of the easiest ways to cut down on waste is by recycling and composting. Instead of throwing away food scraps, you can compost them to create nutrient-rich soil for your garden. If you don’t have a garden, consider starting one! Even a small herb garden on your windowsill can make a difference.

Another way to reduce waste is by saying no to single-use plastics. Bring reusable bags to the store, carry a reusable water bottle, and use metal straws instead of plastic ones. These small changes add up over time and can make a big impact on reducing the amount of trash that ends up in landfills.

Sustainable Finances

You might be wondering how living sustainably connects with your finances. Well, being smart about how you spend your money is a big part of sustainability! That’s why I created Advanced Girl Math, a blog where I share tips on how to make smart financial choices while living a sustainable lifestyle. From saving money on groceries to investing in eco-friendly companies, there are so many ways to manage your money in a way that’s good for both your wallet and the planet.

Saving Water

Water is one of our most precious resources, and it’s important to use it wisely. At Star Track Farm, we use drip irrigation to make sure our plants get the water they need without wasting any. You can do the same at home by being mindful of how much water you use in your daily life. Simple changes like turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, taking shorter showers, and using a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway can save gallons of water every day.

The STEM Connection

Did you know that sustainability is also connected to science? Many of the sustainable practices we use at Star Track Farm are based on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) principles. Whether it’s using science to improve soil health or engineering ways to conserve water, sustainability relies on a strong understanding of STEM.

If you’re interested in how STEM can help us live more sustainably, check out my STEM blog, where I dive into the science behind sustainable living.

Getting Involved

Living sustainably doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. In fact, many sustainable choices, like growing your own food or using less water, can actually save you money! And you don’t have to make all the changes at once. Start small by making one or two sustainable choices today, and build from there.

Whether it’s supporting local farms like Star Track Farm, reducing waste, or choosing foods that are good for your body and the planet, every little bit helps. You can also share this blog with your friends and family to encourage them to start living more sustainably, too.
