Tosha Larios Easy Ways to Live Sustainably Every Day

Hi everyone! I’m Tosha Larios, and I’m passionate about making sustainable choices in everyday life. Living sustainably doesn’t have to be hard or expensive, and even small actions can make a big difference for our planet. Today, I’m excited to share some easy ways to start living sustainably, plus why it’s so important for our health and our future.

Why Does Living Sustainably Matter?

Living sustainably means making choices that protect our environment. From conserving water to using less plastic, sustainable living helps reduce pollution, save natural resources, and create a cleaner, healthier world. For me, Tosha Larios, sustainability is all about finding balance—taking what we need while giving back to our planet.

1. Start with Simple Changes at Home

You don’t have to make big changes all at once. Start with simple actions you can do at home:

Turn Off Lights: Save electricity by turning off lights when you leave a room. Every bit of energy saved adds up!

Use Reusable Bags: Bring your own bags to the store to cut down on plastic waste. Reusable bags are sturdier and better for the environment.

Switch to Reusable Water Bottles: Instead of buying bottled water, get a reusable bottle you can fill up again and again.

2. Buy Local and Support Sustainable Farms

When you shop for local produce, you’re helping the environment and supporting small farms that often use sustainable practices. At my farm, Star Track Farm, we focus on growing food naturally and using practices that keep our soil and water healthy. Buying locally grown food means fresher produce and fewer miles for food to travel, which reduces pollution.

3. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

One of the easiest ways to live sustainably is to practice the “3 Rs”—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Reduce: Buy only what you need, and avoid products with lots of packaging.

Reuse: Find creative ways to reuse items. Old jars can become storage containers, and worn-out clothes can be turned into cleaning rags.

Recycle: Check what can be recycled in your area, and recycle as much as possible. Recycling keeps materials out of landfills and helps conserve resources.

4. Eat More Plant-Based Meals

Eating more plant-based meals can reduce your environmental footprint. Fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes often use fewer resources to grow than animal products. You don’t have to go vegetarian to make a difference—try adding one or two plant-based meals each week.

5. Save Water at Home

Water is a precious resource, and saving it is one of the best ways to live sustainably. Here are some simple ways to reduce water use:

Take Shorter Showers: Try to keep showers under five minutes to save gallons of water.

Fix Leaks: A leaky faucet can waste a lot of water over time. Fixing leaks helps conserve water and reduces your water bill.

Water Your Plants Wisely: If you have a garden, water it in the early morning or late evening to prevent water from evaporating too quickly.

These small actions can make a big impact over time!

6. Learn the Science Behind Sustainable Living

Curious about the science of sustainability? Sustainable choices are often backed by science and technology. For example, using renewable energy, like solar or wind power, helps reduce pollution and greenhouse gases.

For those interested in the science of sustainability, visit my STEM blog. I explain the science behind many of these practices and share fun, easy ways to get involved with STEM and sustainable living.

7. Support Sustainable Brands

Another way to live sustainably is to support brands that care about the environment. Look for products made from recycled materials, companies that use eco-friendly packaging, or those that donate a portion of profits to environmental causes.

By choosing these brands, you can help drive change in the industry and support a more sustainable future.

Every Little Bit Helps!

Living sustainably is about making small choices that add up over time. Whether you start by using a reusable water bottle, supporting local farms like Star Track Farm, or learning about the science of sustainability, every step counts.
